Google Ads vs. SEO vs. AEO. All three, run together.

The honest answer to the question every business asks. Written for owners and marketing leaders who want to stop guessing which channel to run and start running the strategy their competitors are already running.

Short answer

You should be doing all three.

SEO used to give you the top of the search results. Google has spent the last decade replacing that top real estate with paid ads, AI Overviews, the local map pack, and the knowledge graph. Meanwhile, running Google Ads well requires the same well-structured, well-written pages that SEO does, because Google's quality score literally discounts your cost per click when your landing pages fit the search.

The practical answer: build every page as both an SEO asset and a paid-ads landing page, layer AEO so AI answer engines cite you, and run Google Ads so you own the paid slot too. That's full SERP coverage and it costs you less than running each channel in isolation.

What changed

SEO didn't die. The SERP just got a lot more crowded.

Ten years ago the game was simple. Rank in the top three organic results and you owned the click. Rank in position one and you owned about a third of them.

Since then Google has been steadily adding SERP features that push organic results further down the page. Paid ads sit above organic. The map pack (three local businesses on a map) takes the top position for anything local. Featured snippets pull an answer directly from somebody's article and show it above the link. The knowledge graph answers definitional questions without a click. Product carousels take up half the screen for shopping searches. And in 2024, AI Overviews arrived: Google's own AI-generated answer sitting above everything else.

The organic listings are still there. They just have to earn the click harder than they used to. That doesn't make SEO less important. It makes it a different game with a smaller finish line.

What arrived

AEO: the new layer on top of SEO.

Answer Engine Optimization is how your business gets cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview a question about your industry. It overlaps with SEO but has its own techniques: cleaner Q&A structure, explicit factual claims, schema markup, and content organized so the answer is extractable in three sentences.

If you don't structure for AEO, your competitors get quoted. And more of the search audience is asking AI first every quarter. This is the fastest-growing search channel we measure, and most businesses have zero presence in it yet.

The pattern

One page, two jobs.

Here's the insight most agencies miss and every business benefits from: the page you need to convert Google Ads traffic is the same shape as the page you need to rank organically. Clear intent. Fast load. Structured content answering a specific question or buying decision. Trust signals. A clean call to action.

So we don't build separate SEO pages and separate paid landing pages. We build one page that does both. It ranks organically and it improves your Google Ads quality score. When you own both the paid slot and an organic slot on the same query, you get double the SERP real estate and higher perceived authority. Prospects trust the businesses they see more than once on the results page.

The compounding effect

Topical authority + full SERP coverage.

Long-term, the goal is topical authority. Google rewards businesses that publish deeply and consistently about a topic. That's what earns those top organic spots even as SERP features crowd them.

When your organic ranking, your Google Ads ad, and your AI answer engine citation are all working for the same query, you dominate the result. The prospect sees you paid, they see you organic, and if they asked ChatGPT the same question, they saw you there too. That combined presence signals authority in a way any single channel can't.

How we do it

Our approach in practice.

When we take on a client, we don't force them to choose SEO or Google Ads. We start with whichever channel has the fastest return on their situation (usually Google Ads, if their customers already search for what they sell) and build the landing pages so those pages also compound as SEO assets over time.

At the same time, we layer AEO structure into everything we publish: schema markup, clear Q&A patterns, and answer-first writing so AI answer engines can extract clean citations. The AI cites your pages, your pages rank organically, and your Google Ads point traffic to them. One system, three channels of return.

Frequently asked

Common questions.

Should I do Google Ads or SEO?

Both. Google Ads produces results in days. SEO builds durable topical authority over months. Building pages that serve both cuts your ad costs (via quality score) and earns you the organic slot too. The two channels reinforce each other; they don't cannibalize.

What is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization. It's how you get cited by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews when someone asks a question about your industry. Techniques overlap with SEO but explicitly optimize for answer extraction rather than click-through rank.

Does landing page quality really affect Google Ads costs?

Yes, materially. Google's quality score discounts your cost per click when your ad and landing page match the search intent well. A high quality score can cut your CPC by half. This is why we build landing pages designed to serve both paid traffic and organic search.

If I'm running Google Ads, do I still need SEO?

Yes. Organic captures top-of-funnel and informational searches Google Ads can't cost-effectively cover. And appearing in both paid and organic on the same query doubles your SERP presence and lifts perceived trust.
